The Age of Networking

A lot of my Senior year, thus far, has revolved around the job search. With so much out there and so little time, I am eager to find something that seems interesting, innovative, and a match to all of my business goals. Furthermore, I have realized the job search is a process and it does not just happen in one night. What I am learning now more than ever is the value and importance of networking.

While many advertising agencies only hire a few months out, this is the time to establish yourself, reach out to recruiters, and establish your connections. Use tools like LinkedIn and Handshake, find job opportunities that may seem of interest to you, and then message the recruiter or manager on the job post to introduce yourself and show your interest. Right now, I have set a goal for myself to message 10+ people a day at companies that I am interested in. This way I can introduce myself, establish my credibility, and share my interest in the company. Networking is so crucial these days especially with roles that thousands of graduates are applying to. If you are going through the interview process, a recruiter is more likely to remember you if you had a call with them in the past.

In an age with so many opportunities, jobs, and even cities to explore, networking can help you navigate your job search to help you identify what you want and what you feel you need to best thrive in your job. In terms of reaching out, I think sending a message over LinkedIn or Handshake is somewhere to start. State who you are, your major and university, what you are interested in post-grad, and something specific to that company. Here you can also ask if the recruiter has 15-20 minutes to discuss the industry, any opportunities available, and any advice for a college student like myself. This is the best way to get your foot in the door and introduce yourself to your dream company.

Good luck and hope this helps!
