Three Ways to Build Your Personal Brand
Alisha Kumar
From your experiences to how you talk, you differ from someone else in the way you portray yourself. Own it. This is your personal brand. Your personal brand sets yourself apart from others and allows people to connect with you on a deeper level, which is why it’s becoming increasingly important to have a strong personal brand in this competitive advertising job environment. But where do you begin?
Here are three tips on how to build your personal brand:
Know who you are.
To get some ideas flowing, ask yourself questions like:
What do I stand for?
What are my professional goals?
Who’s my target audience?
How do I want to be portrayed to my target audience?
What do I do well that sets me apart from others?
What have I done that shows my strengths?
What’s my unique story?
It’s important to be honest with yourself when answering these questions. Don’t try to fake who you are. Just be you.
Be consistent in your visual theme.
Colors and fonts have certain feelings they evoke, so pick ones that match your personality (we have some fun tidbits on our Instagram about this, so check that out if you need help).
Your resume, cover letter, portfolio, and business cards should be in the same colors and fonts, which will help you be more recognizable as well as increase your credibility.
Have an online presence.
Come up with a strategy for how you want to portray yourself through the content you will post and stick to it.
Be active on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, so that you are consistently strengthening who you are.
See what’s already out there about you online and check if it fits with how you want to be perceived. Clean up any content that doesn’t reinforce your image, since you don’t want to confuse people.
Remember that having a strong personal brand doesn’t happen overnight. Keep working towards it, and you’ll be able to stand out from the crowd!
