What Exactly is Advertising Casual??
Veronica Potyrala
If you’ve spent any time on campus, you have probably seen many Gies students going to professional events, class presentations, and career fairs dressed to the nines in suits and ties. While there are occasions in the advertising world that require business professional or business casual attire, many times the dress code will call for “advertising casual.” Since the advertising industry emphasizes creativity and personality, advertising casual lets your personal style and flair come through. Advertising casual is less dressed up than business casual, but still more professional than an outfit you would wear for a regular day of running errands. Common pieces seen in advertising casual are trousers or dark jeans, casual button down shirts, knit sweaters, and sneakers or nicer boots. Many people add a statement piece such as a funky bow tie or patterned socks.
In the workplace, the dress code can vary depending on company culture. In some agencies, the dress code is very relaxed and in others it leans more formal. Creatives and designers tend to dress more casually in t-shirts or streetwear. Account executives usually dress more professionally, especially when they have client meetings. Always remember to be neat and presentable no matter what dress code is followed.
