What to be For Halloween Next Year: Based on Iconic Advertisement’s Characters

Written by: Lilly McCarthy

I may be biased considering I am majoring in advertising, but I love seeing people dressed up as characters from advertisements. One of the best parts of Halloween is being able to start up a conversation with someone based on just their outfit. This is what makes these characters perfect, almost everyone understands them, I mean who doesn’t know Flo from progressive. So here are some great options of characters from the most iconic ads to dress up as for Halloween.

 Billy Mays: OxiClean

I had a love-hate relationship with Billy Mays as a child because I found these commercials awfully annoying, however, when I found out he was replaced by another person I didn’t know how to feel. All you have to get for this custom is a blue polo, khaki pants, white undershirt, and carry an Oxi Clean bin. “But wait there's more!” If You're feeling fancy you can print the Oxi Clean logo to put on the shirt and grow a nice beard and mustache!

Flo: Progressive Insurance

It may be slightly overdone, but I couldn’t leave out Flo from progressive for these outfits just find a white apron and short sleeve collared shirt, an “I love insurance” pin, and a name tag. You can get crafty with this costume or just purchase the whole get-up from amazon.

Bonus Idea: You and your friends can all dress up as popular insurance companies’ brand personas. (Jake from State Farm, Mayhem from Nationwide, The General’s General, etc.)

 Berries and Cream Guy: Starburst

Throw on your finest colonial outfit and prove to everyone that you have been keeping up with trends. Recently this Iconic Starburst commercial from 2007 has resurfaced as a Tik Tok trend with people incorporating it into all different sounds on the app. If you decide to dress up as this, be prepared for people asking for you to sing the jingle and do the dance!

“1984” Girl: Apple

The 1984 Superbowl Commercial has a reputation as one of the most impactful ads and it was only aired once! The great thing about this costume is how comfortable it will be, as it's just 80’s workout clothes. To put it together you will need a white tank top, orange running shorts, sweatbands for your wrist and ankles. You can make the hammer out of a wooden stick spray painted black and a small cardboard box painted silver.
