If there’s one thing I hate, it’s being late. Being late brings the fear of missing opportunity, inconveniencing others, or awkward entrances, but if there’s one thing I can thank being late for, it’s what ignited my interest for media. In third grade, my dad was listening to me cry my eyes out while sitting outside my elementary school in his car. It had been a half hour since school started and I refused to get out of the car. I didn’t want to get in trouble for walking into class late so my dad gave up and just brought me with him to work.
My dad, at the time, was working in sales for a company called NEC. NEC is a monitor manufacturer for businesses and homes. As soon as we got to his office he led me to what they called “the show room”, a room with displays for their monitors so clients can picture using their products. There were monitors hung up in a mock airport, fast food restaurant, and a movie theater. I was so amazed by the technology and how much knowledge I didn’t know about it.
After this day I was hooked on the media world, and my interest in technology flourished. I began to keep up to date on the latest technology. I bought numerous Nanos after the first edition of the Nano came out and numerous digital cameras and video cameras. I even helped and learned from my dad how to set up his projector when we would have movie nights on the garage. Sometimes my dad would bring home new displays to show me, such as a 3D monitor when 3D was first introduced. Then, one Christmas gift really pushed my interest in media even further, a MacBook laptop by Apple.
Receiving a MacBook pushed my ability in media and technology. I started writing journal entries, editing pictures for my family and Facebook, and created movies, slideshows, fake commercials, and music videos for YouTube using several applications and programs. I was so intrigued in figuring out my way on the editing applications and learning what did what all by myself. Learning how to use an application with no help was like finishing a 1,000-piece puzzle and seeing the completed picture at the end.
Since receiving the MacBook, I went onto high school were I took Graphic Design classes and learned Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Using my knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator, I made banners for the seniors on my cheerleading team and helped with creating the cover of my graduation program. Also, I joined the yearbook staff and used my photography, editing, and interview skills to create the pages of my senior year yearbook. Now in college, after taking the Advertising 150 course and learning all of the media behind advertising, I knew I found my place in media and the breathtaking mass communication. Of course, I can owe it all to third grader me crying over being late.
