Media Electives for YOU
Mallory Pomerantz
Aside from the required advertising courses on the track, media electives are a great way to gain insight into the media industry as well as different segments of advertising. These courses have allowed me to navigate around the college of media, choosing media courses that interest me. This allows you to learn about topics that interest you or even learn about topics you’re not so familiar with! I believe these courses are a great way to expand your palate and recognize what does and does not interest you.
My most recent media elective that I’ve taken was Advertising 311 with Jason Chambers called Classic Campaigns. This class analyzes the most recognized and successful direct mail, print, radio, television and digital advertising campaigns of the 20th and early 21st centuries. It also includes particular attention to their strategy and development as well as their social, cultural, and economic impact. This class has covered some of the most popular campaigns in history, including the McDonald’s “You Deserve A Break Today” campaign as well as “Marlboro Man” campaign. These were some of the earliest company breakthroughs, which is why these campaigns took a lot of remaking, curiosity, and a new wave of creativity. It was with this class that I was able to, firsthand, see the transition into new American habits, while creating a digital world with creative honesty.
Next semester, I am taking Advertising 409, which covers Media Entrepreneurship. This course introduces students to the foundations of entrepreneurship and evolving business models for media. The course will also cover the skills and practices necessary for new entrepreneurial ventures as well as the processes of evaluating an idea, assessing the market, and implementing a new venture. This class sounds SO interesting to me because I love creating new ideas, building stuff up from the ground, and learning about new media startups. Being a Shark Tank GURU, I am constantly inspired and motivated by new ideas.
When it is time for your class registration, take the time to pick out a few media electives that best interest you. There is so much out there, and you never know what can spark an interest. For more information on these courses, click here.
