ADV 311: Classic Campaigns
Alisha Kumar
If you’re an advertising nerd like I am, you’ll love this class! In order to be a good advertiser, it’s really important to look at past successes to learn from them. ADV 311, which is a three-credit hour elective course also known as Classic Campaigns, analyzes various advertising campaigns from the 20th and early 21st centuries, drawing upon important people/agencies, strategies, and their impact. Honestly, you really don’t realize how much advertising has helped to shape our American society until you take this course!
Dr. Chambers teaches ADV 311. Knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, he is a wonderful speaker who keeps you engaged throughout the class period. One thing to keep in mind is that none of his presentations are posted on Compass, and there are no video/voice recordings permitted, so it’s important to come to class, listen intently, and take notes, even though attendance is not required. He does provide an outline of what will be covered in the lecture ahead of time, so be sure to use it! Also, even though there is quite a bit of reading, it really helps out to keep up with the readings so that you have an idea of what will be discussed going into lectures, and it doesn’t pile up during exam time. As long as you come to class and do the readings, you’ll do well on the quizzes and exams.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who’s looking to learn from the greats and geek out about advertising!
