ADV 270: Principles of Sales
Kiley Fletcher
ADV 270, Principles of Sales, discusses what the steps are to have a good company and how sales can improve. This course really helped me envision myself in a sales position and prepares you for the workforce. I learned about segmenting, targeting, and positioning (STP), which are three things you need to know how to do in order to have the right target market for your company. ADV 150, the introductory class at UIUC, touched on STP briefly, but I definitely learned more about it in 270. This class mentions many topics that were discussed in 150 but at a more thorough level. The Marketing Mix is another aspect of sales that both 150 and 270 covered, so if you loved ADV 150 you’ll probably love this course. Another part of this course that I enjoyed was writing case studies. A case study involves reviewing a company’s sales, history, and overall structure and finding ways in which the company can improve. I addressed problems and offered solutions for certain companies, which is something I’ll have to know how to do if I end up working in sales. This class does an excellent job of providing exercises and reading materials that you can apply in whatever career you decide to do under advertising. The professor for this class, Dionne Clifton, is very resourceful and is very passionate about this course and her career. Her upbeat energy makes the lectures interesting to listen to. She has given her students opportunities for internships, participating in studies, and a chance to sign up for the Sales Certificate program here at UIUC. If you’re looking for a fun and engaging ADV elective, I highly recommend this course.
