ADV 305: Digital Advertising Content, Technologies and Concepts
Victoria Anderson
As you might know, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign has an outstanding advertising program with exceptional professors teaching these advertising classes. It is required for students to have a certain amount of advertising elective courses as well. With that being said, ADV 305 has been one of the most insightful and beneficial classes I have taken yet. It explores the concept of digital advertising content, media trends, social media behavior, and so on. This class is taught by Professor Mike Yao, who encourages his students to think outside the box and really ponder on the fast-changing digital world. He sparks students’ curiosity by assigning creative data projects in which students are asked to track their social media activity and come to the conclusion of where media is most presented to them and why.
However, one of the most beneficial topics covered yet is the required certification from the Trade Desk with the topic of Marketing Foundations. Students are asked to complete several certifications throughout the course, which consist of videos, lectures, and interviews along with quizzes and a final exam at the end to test their knowledge. I found this certification process to be extremely helpful, and I personally felt that my knowledge on the topics had certainly been expanded. Upon completion, I felt that I not only better understood the world of advertising but also on subjects such as economics, data collection, cookies, media planning, tactics, data management, and marketing. This certification was also beneficial in the sense that I was able to put this achievement on my LinkedIn profile as well as my resumé.
So, are you looking for an intriguing advertising elective opportunity? I suggest you register for ADV 305 to achieve your full potential, hear from professionals about the fast-changing world of advertising, and boost yourself as a university student.
ADV 305: Digital Advertising Content, Technologies and Concepts

As an advertising major, it’s key to understand the prominent digital landscape which is taking over our industry in order to advertise effectively. ADV 305, which is a three-credit hour elective course also known as Digital Advertising Content, Technologies, and Concepts, looks into topics related to digital media.
What I love about this course is that it really gives a great scope of the digital world, allowing me to see advertising in a different, more modern light. We’re able to connect with consumers at the right place and at the right time now more than ever with the new technologies available. There are no exams (only quizzes), and no group projects. Also, the readings and assignments are minimal. As long as you keep up with everything, it’s not difficult to do well in this class!
Walking into the class, one thing I didn’t realize was that I would get Hootsuite and Programmatic Advertising certified, which are required assignments in this class. Usually, these certification programs cost a lot of money, but we get to do it for free, which is a huge advantage. Additionally, given that we’re living in a digital world, having these certifications on your resume and LinkedIn look great and get potential employers interested in you.
Overall, this is a wonderful class that provides you with very relevant knowledge and skills. I would definitely recommend it!
